Greenhouse & Patio Covers buying guide
Greenhouse covers and patio covers have to do two things at once: keep the weather out and let the light in. These clear sheets protect plants and seating areas without leaving them in the dark. Pick a light reinforced sheet for growing, or glass-clear PVC for a view.
Covers for greenhouses and cold frames
The clear 100gsm Monotex tarpaulin has a reinforced grid inside the sheet and is UV-stabilised. It comes in 19 sizes, from 1.5m x 2m to 10m x 15m. The clear 170gsm mono cover is heavier and lets about 70% of daylight through. Use either to re-cover a frame, shelter young plants or close in an allotment structure.
Covers for pergolas and patios
For a clear roof or side panel, choose the 310gsm clear PVC tarpaulin or the 320gsm clear PVC tarpaulin. Both are glass clear with eyelets. For sides that open and close, the 0.6mm clear PVC outdoor curtain has a clear centre panel, eyelets and hooks. It comes in three sizes: 3m x 2m, 2.5m x 3m and 2.5m x 3.5m, given as drop x width.
Reinforced or glass clear?
Reinforced sheets have a visible grid. Plenty of light gets through, but the view is broken up. Glass-clear PVC works like a window, and it is heavier. Choose reinforced for plants and glass clear for people.
Fitting a clear cover
Measure the frame and add about 30cm on each side for fixing. Pull the sheet tight and give a roof enough slope for rain to run off. Fix with bungee cords, and repair small cuts with tarpaulin tape. The size guide covers measuring.
